Dr. Gary Anthone

An experienced bariatric surgeon who formerly served as the State of Nebraska’s chief medical officer, Dr. Gary Anthone brings more than 40 years’ medical experience to his role on the NASH Physician Advisory Committee. He’s currently chief medical officer for Vetter Health Services in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to that, he served as Nebraska’s chief medical officer from 2019 to 2023.
Dr. Anthone earned his medical degree from Creighton University. He completed his surgical residency years at Creighton University Medical Center and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary in England. He completed surgical fellowships at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Dr. Anthone served as an assistant and associate professor at the USC School of Medicine Department of Surgery, where he was director of the bariatric program. After moving back to Omaha, he became director of bariatric surgery at Methodist Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Anthone has focused on bariatric surgery and other surgeries related to bariatric patients.
He has received numerous awards and honors over the years, including for his teaching while at USC and for his work as a surgeon. He was named to the highly regarded “Best Doctors in America” list for surgeons from 2005 to 2020. The list is a product of validated peer review, in which doctors who excel in their specialties are selected by their peers. Only 5 percent of doctors in the country earn this prestigious honor.
Dr. Anthone has served on a long list of professional committees and advisory boards, as well. He currently serves in a leadership role with the Nebraska Hospital Association and has been a fellow with the American College of Surgeons since 1990. He joined the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in 1992.
