Earlier this year, Network of Advanced Specialty Healthcare (NASH) team members assisted Operation Walk Denver with its mission to provide free surgical treatment to patients suffering from disabling forms of arthritis in Monterrey, Mexico. NASH provided surgical instruments and performed nearly 60 surgeries over the span of one week with the help of 60 volunteers, including Noemi Osorio, NASH’s administrator of patient support services and a registered nurse.

“It was a great opportunity for me to be part of this journey and the entire team was incredible and professional,” Osorio said. “I learned so much from each one of them.”

It was her first time volunteering with Operation Walk and it’s an experience she won’t soon forget.

“The gratitude in the patients that received the treatment is indescribable. Knowing that in some way you helped give them a better quality of life is amazing. These experiences make being a nurse so meaningful,” Osorio said.

NASH Director of Orthopedics Dr. Daniel Rios has been involved with Operation Walk for six years. He said Operation Walk’s thorough patient process takes about seven months, from pre-operative consultation through post-operative follow-up.

“It’s the same process we use for all of our NASH patients, so the experience through Operation Walk is seamless,” Rios said.

Jim Boyle, NASH medical consultant and medical coordinator for Operation Walk Denver, offered further praise of the partnership.

“Without NASH’s assistance, we never would’ve completed our goal of providing free surgical care to so many in need. NASH is focused on quality care and always puts the patient first, and that was clear throughout this entire process.”

Operation Walk is a national non-profit organization that started in 2000 and made its first international trip in 2003, to Nicaragua. Operation Walk provides free surgical treatment for disabling forms of arthritis to those who don’t have proper resources. The group’s lasting impact has been felt in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, Mexico and Peru.
